Pros and Cons of Glass Fencing

If you have a home overlooking your swimming pool or the natural outdoors, glass fencing is one the best ways of ensuring you have an uninterrupted view of the beauty around you. Glass panels in combination with steel or aluminum railing or bordered by frames of different materials provide a luxuriant and aesthetic appeal to your home.

Advantages of Glass Fencing
When it comes to an unencumbered view, no material can beat glass for clarity. It provides you total visibility of the area beyond the fence, and does not interfere with the natural light entering your home. More importantly, glass is a strong material and tempered glass especially can resist the hardest of natural elements. If you install a glass fence fitted with fastening systems made of stainless steel or aluminum railing, you need not worry about corrosion either and these durable fences will last for years together before you need to have them repaired or replaced.

Glass fencing is especially suited to installation around a swimming pool because it does not corrode on exposure to chemicals. Swimming pools need to be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis using certain chemicals and most materials get damaged when they come into contact with these substances. Glass, however, is highly resistant to attack by such chemicals and this makes it an ideal material to use for fencing around a swimming pool.

Disadvantages of Glass Fencing
Although glass is one of the most aesthetic materials for fencing, it does have certain disadvantages. The transparent nature of the material is like a double-edged sword – it does provide you with a beautiful view, but it also results in a loss of privacy. Of course some people do try to overcome this by sandblasting some decorative floral or geometric designs or the family crest into the glass panels.

Yet another major demerit of glass is the cost – not everyone can afford to have glass fencing installed on their property because it is very expensive.

Glass fences do not require a large amount of maintenance but they certainly need to be cleaned on a regular basis. However, not just any cleaning agent will work and you need to be sure the one you use does not have an abrasive action or your glass panels will show several unsightly scratch marks.

If your family includes toddlers, kids or pets or absent-minded adults, glass fencing is definitely not the best material to use. The invisibility of the glass may give you a great view, but it could end up causing an injury to a kid or a pet that walks or runs into the fence without noticing its existence.

Glass fences have the ability to bestow your home with a luxurious elegance. However, it may not be the best option for all homeowners. If you find yourself unable to give up the idea of using glass, the best way out is to combine metal, glass and wood in a unique pattern that gives you a great view without affecting your privacy or safety.
