Starbucks Franchising Opportunities

Starbucks franchising is an area in which countless business entrepreneurs display a profound interest. This is not surprising, as the Starbucks brand of coffee and coffee related items is wildly successful all over the world. Because of the prevalence of Starbucks cafes, many are surprised and also greatly disappointed to learn that Starbucks Coffee Company does not offer franchising opportunities in the United States or abroad.

According to Starbucks Coffee Company, the company has not in the past considered franchising and Starbucks franchising is not a method of operation that the company plans for the future. Sometimes, the company does license its image for use in certain U. S. retail locations such as airports, grocery stores, university campuses, hospitals, and other areas where real estate is not open to company-owned stores. These entities are not company run, but are also not considered to be Starbucks franchises.

Outside of the United States, Starbucks franchising options are also not available. On the international level, the company licenses the use of its products, offers joint venture programs, and also hosts a number of company owned stores. Starbucks Coffee Company often receives requests from individuals who are seeking to open their own Starbucks franchise, but the company has stated that it does not franchise or sub-franchise internationally. Furthermore, the company has no plans to offer Starbucks franchising in the immediate future.

In lieu of opening a Starbucks franchise, the company does make available its logo and products in a special program that is designed for use in the food service industry. As part of this program, Starbucks Coffee Company accepts a licensing fee as well as royalties for use of its corporate name, practices, and logo. There are over 3,000 Starbucks licensed locations in existence in the United States today, and many more throughout the rest of the world. Starbucks Coffee Company is fairly strict with its licensing program; the company deeply scrutinizes the finances of those interested in opening a licensed store, taking into consideration the amount of funds that are available as a down-payment as well as the amount of loan money required. The company also takes into consideration the predetermined location for the Starbucks licensed retail establishment as well as the previous business practices of the person or persons applying for the license.

Those seeking a Starbucks franchising opportunity need not be discouraged by the lack of availability of opening this particular store. There are other specialty coffee companies that do offer franchising opportunities. Because Starbucks is quite prevalent throughout the world, it may be worthwhile in considering a franchise with a company that can compete. Some examples of specialty coffee companies that offer franchising opportunities include Caribou Coffee, Chock Full o’ Nuts Cafe, Coffee Zone, and Dunkin Donuts, to name a few.
