Stay competitive after the interview and follow up using interview thank you notes. The goal is to keep your name in the front of your potential employer. One way to do this is to follow up with a thank you note. Surprisingly, very few interviewees ever send out a thank you note or letter after the interview. Depending on where you get your data the statistics show that less than 3% do.

Avoid calling the employer as this can disrupt their day as you might call during an inopportune time. It's best to follow-up in a non-obtrusive way with a note or better yet an email. During the interview you want to make sure you get the contact information from the person or persons conducting the interview. The best way to do this is to ask for their business card.

You want to follow-up as quick as possible, usually within the first 24 hours. This way you keep your name fresh in the employer's mind. The nice thing about interview thank you notes is they don't have to be formal. Notes differ from letters they're a brief written statement or informal letter. Don't be fooled though by the word note or informal! You still want to be professional in your writing and use proper etiquette.

Some tips to follow when writing interview thank you notes are:

  • Be concise in your writing (get to the point).
  • Address them, by name, to each of the interviewers.
  • Thank them for their time.
  • Add a quick highlight of your skills and how they tie into the organization.
  • Reinforce the fact that you look forward to hearing from them.

Give the employer the one, two punch - immediately after the interview follow-up with a thank you note by email. Then send out a note card using snail mail (regular mail). This added measure of exposure could reinforce your name in the employer's mind giving you the competitive edge you need to get the job!

Interview thank you notes are not a guarantee that you'll be offered the job, but they are an excellent way to show the employer that you're a highly motivated professional who would be a valuable asset to their organization.
