Why Most of the People Prefer Part Time Jobs Rather Than Full Time Work

Visitors: 257

Many people today are opting for a part-time job rather than full time work. Some of the reasons behind this are inability to cope up with stress, personal commitments, lack of job security and inflexible timings. With the number of part time employees increasing, the organizations must revamp the norms of their relationship with them.

An employee must be assessed by the value he adds to his organization. The less number of working hours an employee puts in does not make him inferior to a full time worker. Thus, he must be given due credit and importance. Most employees opt for part time jobs initially because they have other commitments but can later consider a full time vocation. Some others opt for more than one part time job because they find it flexible or are attempting to find out which one suit them better or to fulfill their financial commitments. These part time employees can be equally efficient and competent as full time employees.

Experts in certain fields work with organizations for a short time that is, till the organizations needs are met. In such cases, the management must remember the fact that they may need their services again and so treat them well. Also, by employing more part time workers, an organization can have people with different work styles and skill sets. Part time employees who are pursuing further studies or are working for another organization have better prospects or choice. Considering all these points, the management must treat its part time employees on par with regular employees in order to retain them or to turn into full time employees at an appropriate time.

The pay per hour, leaves and other benefits offered to part time employees must be reasonable. The employment contract must be made after considering several related issues. Appraisals, growth opportunities, training and other programmes for part time employees that aim as their professional development must be fair. They must be given equal opportunity to air their views about the issues concerning them or growth of the organization. Cases of discrimination, employee, harassment or any other factors causing a loss of their morale must be fairly dealt with and at the earliest.

Part time employees of an organization are its prospective full time workers. Thus, the management must maintain good relations with them. The full time employee must be made to realize that the organization treats its part time employee s on par and therefore they must not be looked down upon.
