A recent merger between The Knot and Wedding Channel has created a near monopoly in web advertising for wedding photographers.
Companies like Wedding-Photographers-CT.com are starting to pop up as local responses to the corporate stronghold that The Knot currently has. Rather than compete on a national level website that focus on single states or regions have been able to provide a similar service to wedding photographers without the huge costs.
“We don’t think that The Knot is doing a bad thing we just feel that they have outgrown their market. ” says Kevin Kelley CEO of Wedding-Photographers-CT. “We can provide a service that is equally effective for CT wedding photographers specifically and without the overhead costs of running a national company. ”
From an SEO perspective it appears to be true. The Knot simply can’t optimize its site for every little region of the country effectively. Search engines just don’t go for it. Lets say you are searching “Connecticut wedding photographer”. A small Connecticut company thats energy is applied specifically to advertising in Connecticut with all CT content will be able to beat the multinational site every time with far less time and money spent on marketing.
The fact still remains that the failure rate of small businesses in the United States is frightfully high. If all else fails many times big business can just wait it out until the small companies in the field go belly up. In the end only time will tell if the little guys can win.
