Have you ever attended a summer camp? If so, this book is bound to bring back some memories for you. Not A Happy Camper is the author’s memoir of a time when she was thirteen and attended a summer camp.
One year, Mindy’s parents decided where she was going to go to summer camp. Her father wanted her to go to the camp he preferred and her mother had another choice in mind. The father won only because the mother’s choice had gone out of business. Mindy did not enjoy her summer that year because she said the girls were all mean to her and they had nicer clothes.
After two summers of not enjoying camp, this year would be different. Mindy wanted to decide where she would like to attend summer camp. The man who ran Kin-a-Hurra in Maine is Saul. He even came to Mindy’s house to tell her parents all about the wonderful things available at the camp.
When Mindy arrived at Kin-a-Hurra, things were not exactly as Saul described. In fact, they were quite the opposite. Mindy did not care. This camp was her choice and it is where she wanted to be. She would never complain.
One of the greatest interests to the girls at summer camp was the “boys”. After all, summer camp is where most girls find their first boyfriend and get their first kiss.
Will Mindy be successful at reaching her goal?
Mindy Schneider has written a book that is very funny. It is a story of a young girl growing up during a time when things were very interesting in our country (to say the least). Mindy’s camp friends add a great deal to the story because they really play the part very well. The author goes back and forth in time to give the reader a thorough understanding of what she was going through. If you ever attended a summer camp, this book will be very nostalgic for you. It will bring back some fond memories. I have never attended a summer camp but this book makes me wish I did. No matter what, we were all teenagers at one time and this book will make you think about what you did back then! Not A Happy Camper is a great summer read and one that will give you many laughs.
