Getting the Most Out of Your Used Car Buying Experience

Visitors: 196

Deciding to buy a used car instead of a new vehicle can save you a lot of money - if you do your research and follow a few tips to help you get a dependable car and a fair deal.

The first thing you should consider is what purpose the used car will serve. If you are looking for a used car for your primary vehicle as opposed to looking for a winter car, or a car to drive only in nice weather, the focus of your search will be very different.

Consider your finances before you shop for a used car. Unless you can pay cash, you should check interest rates with local banks and credit unions to ensure you get the best rate. If you purchase the vehicle from a dealer, they may also have financing options. Compare and take the best deal.

Once you have an idea of the type of car you need, go online and check for reviews on particular makes and models. If the model you are interested in buying has a history of repairs, low gas mileage, or other faults, you may want to reconsider. Search until you find a model you like with a good record of reliability.

Next, locate a car you are interested in buying. There are many options for buying a used car. You can go to one of the online sites, such as eBay Motors, a used car auction business in your area, the newspaper, local publications, online classifieds like Craig's List, and of course a dealer.

After you locate a car you want to buy, go back online and check its repair history. You will need the vehicle's VIN (vehicle identification number). The most well known site to do this is Carfax.com; for a small fee, you can get the history of the vehicle. It may be well worth a few dollars to have this information.

All being well with the used car's history, now find out the “Blue Book" price. This will give you an idea of what the car is worth and what you should pay. Online sites have this information available and it is usually free, or go to your local library. Again, well worth the time to do the research.

Armed with all your data and facts, you are now ready to make the deal. Don't forget to ask about warranty, and get everything in writing. Good luck and happy used car shopping!
