The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) earlier conducted its first crash tests of several convertibles. After the meticulous crash tests, the institute awarded the Volvo C70 as one of their ‘Top Safety Picks. ’

The Volvo C70 arrived in the United States in the previous year. From its inception, the car has etched a good name in regard safety and convenience. Aside from the traditional auto parts like the Volvo spoiler, the pool of Volvo engineers equipped the car with a number of safety features. These features include the inflatable curtain, Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), pretensioned seat belts, Roll Over Protection System (ROPS), as well as the use of multiple grades of steel. The inflatable curtain is designed for side impact protection. “As there are no roof members to which the curtain can be attached it is mounted in the door, " noted Skogsmo. “When activated it is directed upwards. "
The curtain is given extra stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other. This is done to allow the feature to maintain its upright position to offer superb head protection even when the car window is left open. Also, the curtain deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over. This feature is deemed a unique solution in the automotive world.
The WHIPS is also integrated to the car to avoid neck injuries. WHIPS could offer maximum protection especially in the event of a powerful rear-end collision the backrests and head restraints in the front seats follow the movements of the seat occupant's body.
All of the C70’s four seating positions feature pyrotechnically pretensioned seat belts with a spool-out function. The feature will help restrain the user at the same time control the forward acceleration of the car occupant.
The ROPS popup bars are also pushed upwards to protect the occupants in the event of a rear-end collision. The goal of the said application is to decrease the risk of the passengers being hit by flying objects from the car behind.
The car will also share S40’s different grades of steel to help control impact energy in the event of a collision. According to the Swedish automaker, the C70 has a unique front energy absorbing structure that utilizes three extra grades of steel aside from the regular bodywork steel. Extra grades include High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Ultra High Strength Steel. When combined in different structural elements, the car maintains excellent low- and high-speed deformation. This was proven by the Institute’s frontal crash testing.
Volvo's first C70 Convertible arrived in 1998 with an impressive array of safety systems. It was the first use of Ultra-High Strength Steel (UHSS) to strengthen selected structural elements. UHSS would later migrate into the XC90 SUV and into subsequent vehicles. “We found this material to be extremely hard, fatigue resistant and added protection without adding significantly to vehicle weight, " said Ingrid Skogsmo, the Director of Safety, Volvo Car Corporation.
Additionally, the C70 is designed to offer effective protection in the event of a rear-end collision. The rear longitudinal auto parts deform in a controlled manner. They are linked to the body sills to dispense the collision forces forward into the car’s body.
