A Long Winter in a Long RV

It was an unbelievable bargain: last year's model year RV bus at $50,000 off the sticker price. A special order that was refused by the customer (pink-wrong color) but that wasn't a problem when the price was considered. Fortunately, the bus matched the pastel stucco of the home it was parked in back of in the owner's south western suburban property. So is this a happy ending? Not yet. It's still parked at home! The grandkids love camping in the back yard but that wasn't the owner's intention for his $150,000 investment. So where do they go in winter?

Well short drives from their home are the eight of nine Arizona Kampgrounds of America (KOA) locations that stay open year around. They take a few short trips to those and are ecstatic with their RV purchase. They especially like the big, flat screen TV mounted above that electric heating fireplace. When they parked with the back and its picture window facing west they were able to watch brilliant sunsets behind the saguaros before turning back to watch favorite movies. They were both couch potato and nature lover without worries about scorpions.

They fell in love with camping. The new pink RV bus owners begin to consider driving it back to their home state of Ohio. So they start to wonder if a winter trip to Ohio is possible. A Quick search of the Ohio State Department of Natural Resources website answers that question. Yes, most of the State's campgrounds are open for winter. They decide on Ohio's New Maumee Bay State Park. They traveled on the safe, clear toll-road Interstate 80. They spent their Christmas watching the gulls, mallards, Canadian geese and herons along the crystalline shores of beautiful Lake Erie. This becomes one of their best memories of RV traveling and they continue on happily in their exsistance as snow birds.
