Just the very thought of “Maria Maria “or “Black Magic Woman” makes listeners, spread across the globe, sway. That’s the charm of Carlos Santana! Since four decades, this legendary artist has been releasing a sonic wave of Afro-Latin-blues infused rock music and encapsulating countless hearts. The Mexican-American Guitarist’s peculiar mix of musical genres from around the world has become the sound of pan-culture music.
Carlos Santana was born in Mexico (1947) and was a son of young violinist. His father was an accomplished mariachi violinist. After hearing blues and rock and roll on the radio, he had a switch in heart and the Guitar became his instrument of choice. His family relocated to San Francisco in the early sixties where his romance with the Guitar deepened. He explored music deeply and became a masterpiece of entertainment just electrifying everyone to swing with him in his flow.
In the 60s he formed the group Santana and since then they have gone on create epic albums which have sold millions of copies. They initially played in the clubs and ballrooms of San Francisco during the golden period of the Haight-Ashbury scene. The band received their first recognition at the Woodstock Festival (1969) with their performance of “Soul Sacrifice”. Their Latin-African jazz sound and the use of instruments like the blues-based guitar, timbales and congas was an unheard of idea in the rock music scene. By 1970, with the success of their album Abraxas, they had gathered credibility and popularity. Their success only heightened as they created many more golden albums, hit singles, along with a reputation as a dynamic live band.
The group entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received a total of 10 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. Carlos Santana was awarded the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ 2009 Lifetime Achievement award and Billboard’s Century Award in 1996. The Rolling Stone magazine placed him as #20 on the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list. Only Jeff Back was a known guitarist who is somewhat comparable with the well known rock star. They both had different ways of accomplishing their goals.
Shape Shifter (2012), is his most recent album which also happened to be the debut of Starfaith Records, his new label. This is a long awaited 13 song instrumental album, which has only one vocal song, by the lead vocalists of the band. He had much bigger dreams and not just looked for recognition but also for respect. His style was unique and made him popular. He infused some great changes in music and created mind blowing music which built his audience.
Latin rock music made him more popular. He worked with many musicians and created the best of music which touched people immensely. He had the power to dominate the hearts of people with his fabulous music. Carlos Santana and his band’s ever evolving sound, while still being true to their genre of Latin-African jazz, has been one of the major reasons why they transcend borders and generations.
