Sometimes it’s not as easy to learn how to play electric guitar was we first think. We have visions of being the next Eric Clapton or Slash, but somewhere along the way it can all go a little wrong. I’ve compiled 5 top tips to help you become the guitar player that you want to be!

Practice practice practice! The best players have one thing in common-they play more guitar than anyone else. Guitar playing isn’t about the number of years you’ve been playing, it’s about the number of hours you put in. Building a thorough practice regime and sticking to it is one of the best ways to make sure that you improve, and FAST.

Play through an amplifier. Many people use their electric guitar acoustically, and rarely bother to use an amp. This can cause problems with muting of strings and unwanted noise etc. These problems can be very hard to get rid of once you’ve picked up the habit, so it’s really something you want to avoid. You don’t have to plug it in 24/7, but at least make sure that some of your practice regime is geared toward playing through the amp.

Learn to use effects. Effects pedals can make or break a guitar player. Someone who knows what effects to use can really get the best from a pedal and use it to take their sounds to new places, whereas someone who isn’t so good will just use as many effects as possible and create a big mushy sound with no dynamics or definition. Getting good with effects is just about experimentation and paying attention to what’s happening around you.

Get a good sound. It’s much easier to have faith in your guitar and your playing if the sound coming from the amp is pleasing to hear. Getting a good guitar sound can take patience and dedication, but you will go far just by listening to other guitar players and working out what makes them sound good-maybe they roll the tone control all the way off when they use the neck pickup, or maybe they use solely the bridge pickup and get lots of harmonics? Paying attention to what others are doing is a great way to learn how to play electric guitar.

Have fun! I find that many people fail to progress with the instrument because their practice fails to take into account the fun factor. It’s pretty hard to stay motivated with something that isn’t fun, and if you aren’t enjoying it what’s the point of playing? Instead of just slogging through the scales and chords or whatever, why not try and make it fun? Reward yourself by playing along to some records or something like that at the end of each practice session. If you can make it fun you’ll find yourself looking forward to your practice sessions, and your skills will really start to blossom.
