Many scientists and deep thinkers deplore war. Who doesn't? But still remember Leonardo da Vinci spent some of his time designing weapons, why? Because he realized that to maintain one's civilization from the Tyrants of Humanity a strong defense is not an option, it is a necessity.
Indeed, I think the reason to write about War Technologies is because of Carl von Clauswitz's wise comments about protecting the civilization that is a leader's responsibility. If you fail to protect it, someone will come and take it from you. Thus we need a Department of Defense.
You know, I come from a military family, dad was a fighter pilot. I grew up watching the Jets take off, turning and often flying over the house, Radar Station on the hill, the works. So I am pretty into that stuff now. Not for good or evil, for protection of our civilization and the love of technology.
And do not worry, I am currently reading Henry Kissinger's book “Crisis" and just got done reading his essay compilations. I agree that political impasse should be just beyond the last resort, because typically that leads to war. My brother is in the USMC, so I think about these things everyday.
Although, I totally agree that the huge dollar expenditures in Iraq, ouch, we cannot afford that - with that kind of money we could have cured cancer, and achieved breakthroughs in nearly every technology on my list, as it often only takes money, R and D and will to do that.
