Why do millions of people play the lottery everyday? Why do millions of people go to Las Vegas and Reno and other destinations that offer gambling every year? They are trying to get rich. Our jails and prisons are full of those that would do anything to become rich. There are those that will say if they pray and have enough faith God has to make them rich. None of these methods work. Yes, some have won the lottery, some hit it big in Las Vegas, and some prosper from illegal activities. None of them have any lasting value in the eyes of God. None will be rewarded at the judgment seat of Christ.
The problem is most of the time the reason for wanting riches is to consume it on your own lust. There is nothing wrong with providing for your families needs. You should provide a nice place to live, to provide for their education, and have your retirement taken care of. Providing for the needs of the poor should also be considered.
Solomon told his son to “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise, which, having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her food in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. ” Proverbs 6:6-8.
Using the talents and gifts God has given you to determine what your purpose of life is and then pursuing it to bring glory to God, will please Him. God instituted work. We are to approach work with the desire to do it for His glory. “Whether, therefore, ye eat, or drink, or whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God. ” I Cor. 10:31.
In pursing your purpose consider the ant. Know you have a goal and to attain that goal you must put forth the effort to gain it. You have to be disciplined. You must work toward your goal everyday. You must have the right reason for your goal. Your goal must be in harmony with God’s purpose for your life. Put your purpose in the right perspective. Jesus instructed His disciples “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you”. Matt.6:33.
When you follow this path to riches, you will be like the ant. You will not go lacking. You will be blessed in this life and the eternity to come. You will not show up at the judgment seat of Jesus Christ empty handed. You will be laying up treasure in heaven.
Being rich in eternity, from the rewards given by Jesus, is far better than to be rich on this earth. The things of this life will pass away. The rewards, or lack of them, will go with you into eternity.
So consider the ant and be diligent in your service to God and in your pursuit of your purpose. Using all he blesses you with to meet the needs not only of yourself but the needs of others.
