For a long time in the past, when you discovered that you have a chipped or cracked windshield you knew too well that it was time to start budgeting for a brand new one. However, these days you can count on the best glass repair techniques that are available that have made the repair of windshields a possibility; however, this will in many cases be determined by the size, location and the severity of the damage. Many car owners are always in a dilemma when choosing between glass repair and window replacement. You want to start by asking at your local auto body and best glass repair shop so you can get a professional recommendation.

Auto window replacement: The process of auto window replacement will normally involve the complete removal and replacement of the damaged glass with a new one that has been tested thoroughly for safety; there are a few cases where glass replacement becomes the safest way that ensures the structural integrity of the windshield. When you choose to go for window replacement you will have to wait for a few hours before you can drive your car again so as to allow the urethane that was used to bond the glass to cure. Auto window replacement is normally more expensive than glass repair.

Auto glass repair: Auto glass repair is usually more affordable and can be a quicker alternative and solution than window replacement even though this will usually depend on the size of the crack and chip as well as the extent of the damage. When you get a professionally done auto glass repair it will be able to prevent the crack or chip from spreading further and it will also be able to hide the original damage without you having to budget for a new glass. There are insurance companies that usually waive the deductible on a car owner’s coverage and cover the cost of the entire cost of the auto glass repair. If you want to consider auto glass repair, the step has to be taken fast so as to ensure that the damage doesn’t spread; the bigger the crack or chip becomes, the more expensive it will cost to do glass repair or at the worst you reach a point where window replacement becomes your only available option.

When you are dealing with damage from a chip or a crack, the location will also play an important role in the determination whether you will need glass repair or auto window replacement. For instance, it is very easy for a crack that is at the edge of the windshield to spread fast and compromise the structural integrity of the entire windshield. Also, you want to know that it is not possible to do glass repair if the location of the crack is anywhere directly in the line of vision of the driver; this is because glass repair on a chip can easily leave some minor distortion and because you want to avoid an compromise, auto window replacement is recommended during such situations.
