Summer is the most prominent season in the Indian subcontinent. Ample opportunity to go outside and long lazy days are some of the advantages attached to this shiny season. Apart from the glorifying benefits brought by summer season, we cannot forget the drawback it brings in the name of sun tanning, radiation, and skin cancer (to the extreme). Sun-kissed skin is a part of popular culture in western countries but in India, tanning and skin disease are problems faced by every outgoer. Now the question arises what measures should be taken to stay safe from UV rays of the sun. Here's is what you need to do to protect your skin from getting tanned or burnt.

1. Understand The SPF

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a measure how effective the sunscreen lotion with SPF will be. For example, if you are selecting a sunscreen with 10 SPF, that means it will allow you to stay in the sun 10 times longer than you could stay without any protection. However, it not necessary that the level of protection increases with the SPF. According to a report, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people must choose a sunscreen with SPF not less than 30 and not more than 50 as the results get to reverse as you go above 50 SPF. More SPF means more chemicals, therefore; it is better to use a sunscreen with 50 SPF.

2. Choose Sunscreen Wisely

It is important to select the right sunscreen lotion for your skin that protects from UVA and UVB radiation of the sun. When you are looking to buy sunscreen lotion, search for those products which contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as they are helpful for skin protection from UV rays of the sun. Your skin type is also a crucial factor in deciding the right kind of sunscreen lotion for you. So, go through many products available in the market and consult a dermatologist if you want, but opt for the appropriate lotion for better results.

Reapply Sunscreen Every Two Hours

There are chances of your sunscreen getting removed from the skin due to water, clothing or sweat. Therefore, it is advisable to reapply sunscreen after every two hours on your entire body. It is preferable to select lip balms with SPF too for protecting your lips and wear sunglasses to take care of your eyes. The right amount of sunscreen for every application is approximately one ounce and must be applied without a hurry. In the absence of sunscreen, you skin will be exposed to UVA & UVB rays which cause premature ageing, wrinkles, sunburn and skin cancer.

Wear Sun Protective Clothes

Before you plan to go out in the sun, choose your clothes wisely that provide protection to your skin. Dermatologist advises wearing light coloured clothes and tightly woven fabric while going out in the sun as light coloured clothes and loosely woven fabrics can block UV radiation. To check whether your clothes are sun protective or not just hold it up to the sun and see if the light is passing through it. If you get to see light passing through the clothes, then Ultraviolet rays can also pass through it very easily.

Keep An Eye On Your Skin

Notice the changes in your skin from head to toe and in a case of any abnormal growth or some major problems consult your health care provider or dermatologist. Pigmentation, discolouration, skin darkening, sunburn, new moles, changes in old moles, etc must not be neglected as it can be linked with radiation from the sun. To avoid skin problems, it is recommended to have annual skin examination, especially for people above the age of 40 years.

The increase in the count of skin cancer patients has drawn our concern towards this issue. However, these problems can be avoided by acting appropriately. Beware of the complications caused due to exposure to sun radiation and take measures accordingly for a problem-free skin.
