Pregnancy, the most important phase in a woman’s life, makes her experience many bodily changes, psychological as well as emotional. As the baby grows, the body starts to demand more than the usual diet intake. This is where a balanced diet during pregnancy comes to the rescue and bridges the gap with nutritional sufficiency, which the body calls for during this time.

Plan your Diet During Pregnancy wisely

As the demand for nutrients increases during pregnancy, it is always sensible to plan and select health food from various brands, later sticking to one which offers the best. Make sure that your diet during pregnancy consists of vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses as well as the milk products, which are rich in calcium, protein, Vitamin A, B and C. Besides these food combinations, you should make sure that you have certain nutrients which are important for you and your child’s growth during your pregnancy. To make it simple for you, let us list down the nutrients which play an important role in a pregnancy diet :-

Folic Acid

Folic acid, well-known as Folate, is rich in vitamin B and is found generally in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale(a type of Cabbage). Folate prevents your child from severe defects of the brain and spine. Deficiency of Folic acid causes poor growth of the fetus, neural tube defects, preterm delivery and low birth weight.

Calcium

Calcium is another significant nutrient, which should be a part of your daily diet during pregnancy. When a woman’s body is calcium deficient, the body itself starts to wear off the calcium stored in her bones required for the baby’s development, as a result making her bones frail and eventually delicate enough to break (osteoporosis). Having dairy products like fat free milk, hard cheese and cereals will help you overcome your shortage for calcium.

Iron

During the term of the pregnancy, the requirement for iron intake increases as well. Iron in our blood helps move oxygen to the blood cells. Throughout the pregnancy, women have blood in excess volume; therefore this extra blood calls for an extra amount of iron. During this phase, not just your blood cells but your growing child’s cells need proper supply of oxygen. This is where the demand for the amount of oxygen is reached by iron.

Deficiency of iron causes Anemia, which can be the reason of preterm delivery or low birth weight of the baby. Extreme low iron can make your child anemic in infancy. Lack of iron can be made up by having red meat, shellfish, beans, potatoes as well as iron fortified cereals.

Apart from having healthy food during pregnancy, one can also find these nutrients in good quantities in health powders meant specifically for expecting and lactating mothers available in the market.
