Evolving trends in the recruiting industry place LinkedIn as a vital requirement for present day job search. As discussed earlier, LinkedIn is an extension of your resume. LinkedIn does the same role what resumes are doing for quite some time now. However to utilize LinkedIn in its full job hunting potential you need to know some tricks, which we have compiled below.

LinkedIn Is More Than A Resume

A LinkedIn profile can do much more than what a resume could do. Hence it is important to avoid clichéd resume keywords from your LinkedIn profile. Words like ‘responsible’, ‘strategic’ and ‘effective’ etc. are common overused keywords in most of the profiles. Instead of using generic keywords you may add additional professional credentials to get more exposure.

LinkedIn allows users to upload presentations, videos and other content which could be a direct demonstration of the work you have done with your previous employer. LinkedIn also allows rearranging the profile layout to suit our needs.

A Complete Profile

Try to fill all the sections in LinkedIn, score at least an ‘expert’ level in profile strength although an ‘all star’ is highly recommended. A completed LinkedIn profiles receive 7 times the views compared to partially completed ones and 14 times more when it has a profile photo. You may also add more than one previous positions (now matter how relevant they are) thereby increasing your visibility by 12 times.

A perfect LinkedIn headline not only sums up who you are but it also allows your profile to be listed in the search. Recruiters use straight forward search terms which is specific to your industry of work.

Handpick Right Skills

LinkedIn offers you to showcase your skills with your connections. Hence be specific with the skills that make you good in your job. Your connections can endorse these skills proving that it is trustworthy. You can also add recommendations from your previous employers reinforcing your suitability for a role. Most of the top companies today rely on LinkedIn to recruit top individuals. If you miss out on adding skills onto your resume you might fail to reach in search results.

Follow Dream Companies

There are over 3 million company pages in LinkedIn and following your dream companies can keep you up to date with the developments. You’ll also get notified every time when they post anything or job openings. Following a company in LinkedIn is helpful in learning more about the company culture and job environment.

Build Your Network

A successful LinkedIn is far from complete if it has fewer connections. A minimum of 50 connections are necessary for a successful LinkedIn profile. The more connections you have the better. Through more connections you will be able to show up on sidebars and searches. When requesting a connect use a personal message instead of standard LinkedIn message, it helps to develop a relationship.

Get Busy In Groups

LinkedIn groups are one important way of socialising with professionals. Groups exist in various categories like industry specific, entry level specific and job type specific. You can start a discussion or join in a discussion to share your insights and knowledge. This improves your visibility as most of the recruiters follow LinkedIn groups.

Self-publish

LinkedIn’s self publish option can be used effectively to showcase your professional knowledge with the world. You may also use the self publishing option to share your works like blogs, articles and case studies.

Following all the above tips can surely make you a viral profile in LinkedIn. Along with all these, searching and applying for jobs through LinkedIn is also important. A better profile is necessary to back up your application and an interview call.
